The house is located on the rocky shore line, a few houses north of the town wharf. It looks out on the wharf, Smutty Nose and Manana to the left, the distant mainland, and Nigh Duck Rock on the right. There are many beautiful sunsets, and swimming off the rocks in front of the house. Most visitors comment on the unique architecture and charm of the house. It has the feel of a bygone era.
The house was built in 1908 for the headmaster of a school in Franklin, MA. The large middle room upstairs was known as the “dormitory”. Apparently he brought groups of students to the island on occasion.
The ground floor centers around a very large living room, with a long window seat, “bullseye” glass windows, two portholes, a large dining table and a large granite fireplace with a bas relief above the mantelpiece of Captain John Smith “Coming around Smutty Nose.” Two front porches look out on the ocean, often with beautiful sunsets.
The kitchen and pantry include a gas stove, refrigerator, butcher block counters, a lunch table, filtered water, and a microwave. Two large bedrooms complete the downstairs, each with a full bath and shower. There are vented propane heaters in the kitchen, the bedroom next to it, and the living room.
The upstairs has three bedrooms, with a bath, sink and toilet in one of them. The house can sleep approximately 14 people.
The house is accessible by a short path from the wharf, or another from the road between the Island Inn and the Lupine gallery.
